    fuel pump interchangeability

    can a dual pump car have the later style pump swapped in place of the transfer pump? Seems like it should?

    seems totally legit. you'd just need to replace that soft line upstream of the filter/pressure regulator.

        really? I just figured 1 pump was less trouble than 2, plus the factory changed it, so they must have thought it was better. plus cheaper when It breaks

          The early setup gives you some redundancy. If the in-tank pump gives up the ghost you can still run on just the external main pump. Though this is somewhat of a false economy as if you don't replace the in-tank pump, the main pump will fail sooner because of increased demands placed on it.

            It doesnt give you redundancy, the intank pump is a lift pump, its not designed to run the system, only provide fuel to prevent things like vapourlock. If the mainpump fails and the intank pump is still fine, you are still going to have problems.

              You can however run the car on just the main pump for a while so it does provide some redundancy.

                Since the late 80's BMW has been travelling down a road of 'they dont make them like they used to' so be careful what you try to update. The early system is more reliable than the late system in this case.
