motronic 1.0 to 1.3 issues need help

the chassis is an 85 318i. Engine is an 84 325e. I did a complete (electrical and all proper hardware) motronic 1.3 conversion not long ago and have not been able to solve one issue. I have replaced the ecu, icv, and afm twice and haven't been able to fix this problem.
The engine starts up and idles fine but when I try to rev past 2k rpms the engine completely cuts off and back on unless I back off the throttle and keep it under 2k. I don't run a cat and I can smell it lean out some when it does this. When I unplug the ICV the revs go up slightly but now I can redline the engine without it cutting out if I want to, I plug the ICV back in and then the cut out comes back.
I want to blame the ICV but it and the one I tried before were working as far as the idle goes. I am up for any ideas to try, I just want this car running right again with motronic 1.3.

    TIA,
    Steven

What chip are you trying to run? Eta engines never came with 1.3. Anyhow, it sounds like you have something hooked up wrong. I'd go back and check all my wiring and connections.

I was using a 153 1.1 ecu now I am using a 173 1.3 ecu. All the compenents are installed for a full "i" conversion. The engine harness is from an 89 325i

One thing I don't have plugged in is a vaccum sensor that I guess is for emissions. It was part of the throttle body vaccum system. I have that plugged off. Could this cause the problem I am having?

Are you talking about the purge valve? Shouldn't have any effect, no. Which AFM are you using?

was using an m30 afm which i thought was the problem, but i just got a 352i m20 afm in today and that didn't fix it :(

              why would you be runing a # 153 or # 173 "i" ecu's ?
did you swap out the chip with "e" specific one ?

if not, would think that what you need it's a "e" chip, i have a "e" oem one and one of those $ 45 ebay perfomance "e" chips if you like.
say $ 35 shipped for both.

does it sound enough like a 419 scam ? ;)

I dont need an e ecu. The engine has been converted to a 325i specification less the double valves springs and cam for now. Think of it as a "i" engine not an "e"

Okay, I've done this, and I'm not sure why you are having problems. What he is trying to say is that there is nothing "eta" left on his eta engine (fuel injection wise anyway).

I dont think your ICV is to blame, my car is no different when the ICV is unhooked, it only runs a motor that keeps the bypass door closed to meter the correct amount of air in at idle.

Did you wire in the c104 to the c101, shouldnt have any driveability issues without, but to cover al bases. Are you certain that all of your parts are working? I had to get a new set of injectors and rewire several things on the harness that I used because my car was only running on 2 cylinders the first time I started it up. Do an vacuum test, and fuel pressure test to be sure its nothing mechanical.

Then start checking your sensors. 1.3 wont start reading most sensors until you are out of open loop, so try and warm it up. Also stick a code reader on it, if you have access. Thats how I found out about injector 1-3-5 not operating, and fixed my problems.

I have driven the car a few times for long distances before since the swap just with the icv unhooked so it would rev past 2k. I don't have a code reader yet but looks like I will be getting one real soon. I am pretty sure the injection system is fine, I had just bought some 19# Design III injectors from a user on this site. The engine actually runs really smooth, smoother then it did when it was motronic 1.0.
I wired up the C104 just like rs4pro had explained in a post a long time ago (used alot of search function in doing the swap) Guages and all the instrument cluster lights work and the altinator charges. I just have this one problem keeping the car from runing 100%

Yes, I am in the process of working on something somewhat "special" and I needed to upgrade to motronic 1.3. The cam has nothing to do with my problem at the moment. I am just trying to get the engine running right before I work on things like a cam. Just taking one step at a time :)

Figured it out as always :) was the center wire on the injection harness plug. It was loose in the socket so I bypassed the plug and now the car is running 100%

Funny, thats where my problems were too. I had to bypass the power wire on the injector harness and run it right from the ecu.

Good to hear you figured it out. How does it run? Id think the aggressive timing of the 1.3 would be too much for the 'e' cam and small ports. But you said it was only temp.. what do you have planned?

runs excellent with the 19# injectors and m30 afm. I have a spare eta head I was converting to something similar to a 731 323i spec head but with massive porting and a larger cam like a 284 or a 288. Other mods would also be in order but I tend to change my mind alot on these things so I am taking it one step at a time.
