Just took my brakes off, weird happening.

I hauled my brakes off then and a rivet type bolt was stuck between the brake disc and the shield around it? I believe it is what has been causing a weird dragging noise in my rear end lately. I just cannot identify what it is, or where it came from. Nothing else around the area resembled it.
Ill snap a pick and post it, any ideas anyone?

i had a rock stuck in my rear caliper once, they were chip sealing my road and all of a sudden i heard the crazy grinding noise, pulled over, couldn't find anything, car rolled back a little bit and the noise was gone..... can't imagine what your rivet is from thou

Rivet from the braking pad maybe? How worn were the pads? Maybe it wore down enough to wear through one of the rivets and let it fall out. Your pads would have to be in HORIBLE shape though, not to mention the rotor surface would have big gouges in it.

Well its fairly large, and my brakes work very well. Im thinking it has something to do with a brand new e brake being installed before i bought the car. So it was installed less than 3 weeks ago. Heres the pics, any clues?

Having never had any BMW rear brakes apart, I am not totally certain, but I have had lots of other drum brakes apart.

To me, that looks like the prong that retains the spring that holds the pad down.

Did you find a distorted little washer with a slit cut in it? Maybe a spring bouncing around?

Hope it will be an easy fix.

Yup grab a new hold down kit from BMW, or elsewhere. It comes with that and new springs.

Yea its what holds down the e brake shoes..
Only problem is the reason they came off is becuase the dust shield that surrounds the brake disc has a few minor problems.
Where the two screws (that connect the ebrake shoes) connect to the dust/dirt shield, it has rusted away. That is why the let go. The place wjere the scres go in and make a 90* turn to lock in place has rusted to the point where they cannot hold. So i managed to put one back in and hold the ebrake shoes in place, but i think i need a new dust/dirt cover that surrounds the brake disc in order to re connect 2 new screws.
I can understand if what i typed makes no sense as i just finsished exams and am pretty drunk, but i was there earlier today to put them back together and thats what the problem is. Im just wondering if i need to replace the whole cover that surrounds the disc brake, or if i can just get new brake shoe screws and see if they hold. As it is i have the ebrake shoes held in place by one of the screws that were lose, it is pretty solid, but i think it would be more safe to have both of them there.

This seems like a hard part to get, and im wondering if the other side might be the same? I drove the car around today and it was fine, i dont really want to bring it to a mechanic as its only 1 ebrake shoe screw that is not there and i think i can do it myself easily. I'll let you know how it works out.
