Im rebuilding an s38b36 with a pretty unknown service history. When I picked it up the engine had 2 bent intake valves in the same cylinder. According to the guy it was in a car and running before I bought it. So for the rebuild ive had .002" shaved off the head and .002" shaved off the block. It was obvious that before that the head had been shaved a decent amount and most likely the block also so I took some measurements to try and find out how much. My guide says that normal head thickness is 3.7767-3.7822". Measuring about 8 points around the head my numbers were 3.7634 to 3.7695" witht the majority around 3.767" I wasn't sure how to measure the block but when I put the timing chain cover on it and used a strait edge and feeler gauge, the top of the cover was .012" above the block. Is this and accurate way to tell how much has been taken off the block?
Looking at this it seems that im roughly .01" under for the head and .012 for the block. This means that I need to add .022" on to the stock thickness of .07 so I need to order a head gasket of .092". So r3v does this sound good or complete bull?
