Starter spinning?

Lately when ive been starting the car i hear this mechanical spinning sound for a few moments before it dies. As soon as i start the car the sound escalates in tone with engine RPM then dies out in a couple seconds. Im thinking its the starter sticking to the flywheel? Any other ideas?

Do you mean the starter takes while to engage, or you think it is staying engaged? Also is your clutch in or out when you hear the noise? Does your clutch affect the noise? Maybe throw-out bearing?
