    M40?

I have a eurospec 316i with a M40. I have an issue. The car runs fine no problems starting, but other then the normal valve train noise from the hydraulic lifters everyonce in awhile it will start to tick loudly and then if I give it some RPM's most times she will quiet down. It has absolutely no problems with anything else, and even when it does this it drives normally I am just trying to prevent further problems. the ticking usually only last 30 seconds to a few minutes, It sometimes does it abou 2 minutes after I start it and let it warm up in the morning and then it stops a few minutes later.

Yeaah, m40 will do that, they are notorious for premature camshaft wear.

You could try finding another camshaft, but I would suggest you start looking for a better engine(m10,m42,m20(anything else basically)) and drive this one till it shits out.

I dont really have the money or time to do all that so I am just hoping it last me 9 months and someone will buy it for 1500$ after that. I am overseas in Italy. can I replace the cam and not replace anything else? It is also a Timing Belt correct?
