working on some leaks on the 318

My 318 has leaked some oil and coolant for a while now, so im taking some time to try to fix any and all leaks. the engine was a total mess, i had to use various things to scrape the dirt off because a paper towel or rag would just smear it everywhere.

so far im going to replace:

    the water pump O-ring
    t-stat housing gasket
    dipstick tube gasket
    lower oil pan gasket

but im thinking of also replacing:
    upper oil pan gasket
    crank seal
oil filter housing gasket and o-ring

    what should i replace?

Also, i was looking at the harmonic balancer and it looks like it might be cracked?

I also hope to get rid of the mess of hoses under the intake manifold by connecting the valve cover vent to a catch can, connecting the idle control valve directly to the nipple on the intake boot, and running a hose from here to here

I'm also installing a z3 steering rack at the moment

i don't see the crack your talking about on the balancer, but if it is cracked get a new one imediatly... i rearagned a couple hoses on my engine as well. looks much cleaner:) you should definatly replace the main seal... i didn't realize earlier that you wern't planning on doing that.

have you tried using the engine degreasers?

its hard to tell where all that oil is coming from, especialy because the fan spreads it arorund so nicley:D

Nick. Sell that car, seriously. It's not worth fixing let alone modding.

I thought your parents were making you sell your E30?

The little hose re-routing and "catch can" ideas you have sound ridiculous at best. I'm going to let the OG's rip you apart on this one, I don't even know where to start.

my dad hasnt said anything about it in a while, so i guess his anger has settled. he was complaining to me about it a while ago and i told him that its not anything he hasnt done he just hasnt gotten caught.

to say something like that you must know all about the routing of all the hoses of the m42 engine.

if you could see what i was talking about it would actaully make sense. there is a bunch of crap that goes through the "throttle body heaters" which are not needed as the car will hardly ever see freezing temps, and it takes a while for the engine and coolant to warm up anyways so by the time warm coolant is circulating through the heater, it will already be above freezing. Thats why i will run a hose from where one of my fingers point to where the other one points. I will install a catch can (do you know what that is) onto the valve cover so there will be no more oil and shit in the throttle body and intake. then one hose from the afm to the icv and a whole mess of hoses is eliminated. I will try to take a picture for you.

the oil cap also leaks, even a new one did, even after i checked that there were no mars or anything on the valve cover, so i still have to figure that out. I do know that it was probably causing a vacum leak (if a little oil would come out evey few hundred miles, i imagine air can get in.) this would also casue an oil loss through the throttle body, so the catch can will help with all that
