The first thing I did other than the chip. Was where ur air comes in if u put ur hand under the cap like above ur air filter I will feel this little box thing. Remove it and that wait the air can flow nicely rather In that top square thing. It doesn't do a lot but hey everything adds up haha.

Invest your money in maintenance and gas to drive it. much more fun than wrenching.

I don't remember how many hours I spent working on my first car, a 70's mazda 323 it was a 4 cylinder, 4 speed, with 2 doors and 2000 pounds. I do remember fondly, my brother taking me for a drive in it down the canyon when I wasn't old enough to drive yet though and that is what I cherish.

Remove hood, trunk, doors and all contents of trunk.
Sawzall muffler off preferably behind the driver. This may or may not free up some HPs but its all placebo with the loud sound.
All of this will make the work load on the engine easier. Free HP
    OOOOO ya almost forgot.
Remove lower part of air filter housing. Then orient the air filer into the flow of on coming air (since you have no hood). BAM Instant RAM air. Its the poor mans turbo.......
    Good idea!
