more to the point I would like to kno where I can find specs on this stuff,do I have to use calipers?
how is the pitch of a nut determined?

    With a pitch gauge.

That being said, 98% of metric fasteners use a given pitch for a given diameter. For example 98% of 8mm nuts and bolts will be 8 X 1.25 , the remaining 2% will be 8X1.00 and they wont be on your car.

With a caliper you can measure the bolt diameter and it should be obvious, an 8mm bolt will be 7.85mm or so.

    The common sizes are

    5mm x .8

    6mm x 1.00

    8mm x 1.25

    10mm x 1.5

You can look up the relevant parts on realoem.com and get the diameter and pitch. But don't use garden variety parts for the exhaust. Go to your dealer and get the copper plated self locking nuts that are supposed to be used.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
