Sensor in the transmission. Hope you have small hands and a thin wrench.
    1989 325i - 2.7i, Holset H1C, 60lb injectors, whodwho MS-PNP.
2012 Passat TDI - DD Duty
2008 GMC Yukon XL Denali - Kiddie hauler/grocery getter

I had the same probs. Checked fuse and bulbs which were fine. I changed the reverse sensor on the transmission, it wasn't too bad of a job. But, that didn't fix my prob either. It ended up being a cut wire under the car that runs to the shifter... saw it when I put it up on the lift for some suspension mods. However, for you it's most likely the reverse sensor on the trans.

You may want to check a couple of things first.

            1. Pull up your shift boot and make sure your reverse switch isn't disconnected.

            2. Go under the car and make sure the reverse switch wiring isn't rubbing against the driveshaft and either frayed or broken. If the wire sheathing has been worn off... it will short out your reverse lights when it touches the driveshaft. Many POs will simply disconnect the reverse switch at the shift boot rather than repair the wire or keep replacing the fuse (ask me how I know). If this is the case, replace the fuse, reconnect at the shift boot, repair the frayed wire, and then zip tie the wire so it no longer rubs against the driveshaft.

            3. If all else is okay, then go ahead and replace the reverse switch.

            Good luck.
