the car runs great but wont pass smog. my buddy i bought it from got it to pass putting alcohol in about 1/8 of a tank. Im really trying to avoid doing that. It fails on the HC test. I live in socal, just wondering if anyone has any ideas to what the issue could be.

Cat could be bad, could also try sea foam to clean stuff up. I know auto places also sell stuff that can help pass smog that you add to the fuel.I have friends who are EOD bro.

if the car is running like it should, i'm 95% its the cat. get a new cat weld in by muffler shop should be around the $200.Comment

How the car fails smog and what the number are will provide a clue as to why. Tell us those and we can make suggestions.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

High HC indicates combustion problems--could be spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, injectors, O2 sensor--you need some diagnosis. Like Jim said, tell us the numbers.Comment
