So long story short, when I went to start my car last night I found that the blower had stopped working on all 4 speeds. I went back this morning and found that the auxiliary fan and AC system had quit working. I checked the fuse box and found that fuse 3 and fuse 20 had blown. I replaced them, but got no functionality, but the fuses remained intact. I also opened the glove box to look behind the HVAC panel, and saw that there was a loose shiny silver rod with a plastic end piece, and a BOSCH motor with a plastic arm connected to nothing. (I am not sure if this is a recent failure). This might not be related, but I heard a snapping sound from the front of the car as I pulled out of my parking spot last night (after I had discovered the blower was not working). Has anybody experienced something similar to this, and if so, what was the problem?

Car: 04/1987 325is
Symptoms:
- Fuse 3, 20 blown
- Blower has no functionality on all 4 speeds
- Auxiliary fan does not turn on
- "Recirculate air" button does not function
- AC button (normally engages blower and aux fan) is not functioning
- AC button and recirculate button do not light up when pressed.
- Disconnected metal rod behind HVAC panel (rod to move "recirculate air" flaps?) - seems to be disconnected at both ends
- BOSCH motor close to disconnected rod (near glove box) with a plastic arm (on the "driver's side" of the motor) connected to nothing
- Temperature when this all went down was about 26 degrees F (not sure if that helped to cause the problem)
My thoughts:
- It could be a broken AC / recirculate switch (but I don't think that would kill the blower)
- The blower motor could be blown, which seems odd, because it was working fine the last time I drove it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
