    1991 318is: s50 motor drop or m50?

I'm thinking about doing an s50 motor-drop into my car, or an m50. When one is better, and why?

I'll get pictures of my car soon btw, haha. I just tinted the windows, and in the next week or so i'm going to get the new paint wet-sanded and buffed. Then I'll take pics. It'll be sweet.

ALSO. I'm going to get Kosei k1 wheels for the car. It'll be sweet, I hope. :D

umm....do you know what the m50 or s50's are in?!?!?! not trying to be mean but the answer is obvious...if you have the cash go w/ the s50 or even a s52

    btw k1's are discontinued

AND you should come to the Greensboro meet on the 14th

You can carpool w/ me and a few other guys might go from boone...I'll let you know....BTW hows the Duct Tape factory?

lol I know they are discontinued, but ebay isnt.

and about the motor: I do know what they are in, and I know that either one will fit. I didnt ask about that, I asked why you think I should. I can't have "its obvious, put the s50 in." Tell me why I should, before I waste a shit load of money. I'll be honest, i don't know a whole lot, but I am wanting to learn, and i am finding more stuff out.

I want to know why the s50 is better, other than it's a lot faster and stronger. Whats the good in it, what else would I need to buy, IE rear-end, differential, etc. I duno im probably making myself sound stupid, but it comes with learning about shit.

I've been reading up on http://www.e30m50.com/ but I wanna know more about it.

      Thanks:)

Fox, my little brother, is still learning (eagerly) about all this stuff. he wants to do an m50 swap later down the road and is just trying to learn information. go easy on him.

anyways, i'd prefer to go with an m50 swap for price reasons. you dont really need the power of an s50 for your uses. (daily driving and auto-x). an m50 is plenty powerful and will be cheaper to maintain and cheaper to do the actual swap (but still expensive). YOU GOT TO PAY TO PLAY!

well most people if they had the money would go for the s5X's but personally I would go w/ a m50 and turbo it w/ the saved $ but what can I say...I love turbo's. So Bokes are you and your brother gonna come to the meet? you really should. Its gonna be fun :)

and fox...no worries you need to learn some how...I guess that sounded a little harsh but I wasn't tryin to be. I was just saying a s50 would be better at first b/c a turboed one is amazing but not exactly cheap or as cost effective as a m50...and I belive its relativly easy to bring the m50 up to s50 spec...For the record I say boosted m50.

imo run the m42 for a while, it's a great learner motor. i've learned more about driving with my 318is at track events in 4 months than I ever did with my old 325is in 2 and a half years. it's fun fun fun.

I dont understand why more people go for a modded M50. Im doing S52 headers, maybe M3 cams, and a tms chip. Good compromise between price and power, methinks.

yeah thats what I was saying...I think a m50 since its cheaper and all...is a better pic than the s50. I forgot everything you need to do to bring a m50 up to s50 specs but its not that much...and still cheaper than buying a s50. I think that people just want the s50 for the name and b/c of the valve cover. But Fox you should just turbo the m42...I was thinking about doing the m50 for a while but then I decided why not just turbo the m42. Most people joke on the m42 but it really does have potential. I hopefully will get my turbo in early this summer...and I'm doing it in boone so you are more than welcome to come over and boost yours too ;) We can make it a party.

I vote to swap in an s50. (that is what I am going to be putting in my car soon).

                      Reasons:
Why waste all of that time, money, and energy to swap in an m50 to gain 20hp from an m20?
With the same ammount of work, you could swap in an s50.

I thought the torque is what made the M50 so attractive, thanks to vanos. Im swapping in a M50 and matching trans because its cheap and theres so much more potential than the m20. I am starting to think that I'm going to put my m50 on the stand and wait until I can put some bigger cams in it. Then I'll drop it in.

Thanks for all the info on this. :)

From my understanding, doin an m50 motor swap would be the best route to go to. It'd be cheaper, and not hard to get to the same power as s50, right? This all wont be happening until like, 1 - 2 years down the road from now.
I'm trying to learn as much as I can.

You guys will probably see me at the meet this weekend in Greensboro. :D Hopefully I will have the paint wet-sanded and buffed before I go down, so you will get to see it shiny. hah I also tinted the windows, so that's pretty cool.

                            Thakns a lot though!

                            peace
