Check Engine Light - DME control

When I bought my E30, the check engine light was on and it's throwing the code 1211 (DME control unit). The previous owner stated when he put in his BMP chip the light came on and it's been on since.

Note that the car has no driveability problems and if the light wasn't on, you probably wouldn't know. Could it be the chip was installed improperly or it's a bad burn? I have the stock chip and I'm going to throw it in and see what happens, but I just wanted to know if any of you guys had an idea as to what the problem could be.

I am having the same issue, although the car runs great and I don't think there is really a problem. I am planning on resetting the check engine light, and if it comes back, installing a different chip (probably the original).

I have a '91 318is.
