Hey guys, i ended up getting a 92 325i with the m50b25 of course. Anyway, my thermostat went out in the middle of traffic and i blew the head gasket. So my question to you all is. Should i buy the damn tool for the removal of the cams or should i just swap it for a M50TUB25. My motor has like 218k on it so i think maybe its time for a new one or a rebuild. On that note anyone know the approximate cost of a m50 rebuild? Also general pricing or advice would be appreciated.

I read about a technique to remove the cams without needing the tool. Its something like this:
Turn the crank until all the the valves are closed except piston #1
Remove pistons #2-6 cam caps
Loosen piston #1 cam cap by turning each bolt (or nut) like a 1/4 turn at a time and then the other so that you "walk" the cam cap up without putting a bending load on the cam
Remove cam
This was discussed either here or on bfc.
