I am doing the headgasket on my m30 swap, and I was wondering what the best method is to align the chain, etc. to keep the timing correct. I was think of just marking the cam sproket, and main sproket, and then when reinstallin, just line the two back up again. Or do I need to bring cylinder 1 to TDC?

get the engine located at #1TDC
Before you unbolt the cam gear from the cam run 2-3 zipties through the holes in the gear, around the chain. Make them good and snug. This is works fine, chain won't move.Tenured Automotive Service Professional - Avid BMW Enthusiast

I think I am going to try Jordan's way, and mark the crank sproket and chain with a grease pencil to be sure it dosen't move at all. Thanks for the cam timing FAQ, by the way. Very helpful. This is my first time removing the head from any engine, so I am not familiar with the procedure as much as I should be. Any other advice other than whats in the Hayne's manual?
