    Performance Cams

I asked Bimmerforum, and some guy said that you all had opinions on performance cams. I have a 325i, and I was seriously thinking about getting a performance cam. So, what do you all think about cams?
Me: "I can't wait to redline my car!"
Mark: "Didn't you just break a rocker arm?"
Me: "Yeah, I don't think I've learned my lesson."
    Mark: "You never will."

Putting a cam in a stock m20 is really pointless.

    Honstly.

If you have alot of headwork, or other internal work then sure.

On a stock engine its really pointless.

Well I wouldn't go as far to call it pointless. You will gain performance, but everything else will be holding it back. The engine is nothing more than a complex air pump.

If you get a perf. cam, make sure to get matching valve springs at a very minmum. Gasket matching all the ports will help it breath better. Bigger cams also like higher compression,
10:1 works. Headers would help as well. If you do the cam now, anything you do later can only help and add more hp.

Generally speaking you would want to rebuild the engine around the camshaft, as this is the heart and soul of an engine. Its what makes your air pump breath, More air More power.

I've a Schrick 278° in my stroked 2.5 and my idle is a bit rough i think the 272° is the topper ;)

Basically, if I were going for a cam, it would really be helpful if I had something like a stroker engine.

When considering a cam , you must know what is the next bottleneck and how it will affect breathing, as to be able to pinpoint where the power curve is going to move, with the cam, and then if you change anything else,

I think the AMF is about as restrictive as things get on a M20,
Swap that for a MAF and your cam will work alot better, get some headers and the gains from the cam will really show, then whats left is head work and or Intake system swap (i.e Individual throttle bodies) the cam will love that,

Man, with putting in an MAF, I think I'd rather just have a turbo. It seems about the same price, at least, from what I've seen.

Keep telling yourself that.... Do you know what a MAF is? You can get one from a mustang for cheap, then all you need is an SMT-6 or the like (~$300) to tune it. I think that's a bit cheaper then turbocharging your car.

flapping-door meter is a restriction to a turbo as well. don't think of it as one or the other...
