spark plug blew out of my motor!!!

so i was driving and as i start to go from a stop light i suddenly hear a loud ping noise come from the engine and suddenly the engine noise gets louder i recognized the sound and pulled over and looked and sure enough a spark plug blew out of the head. i tried looking for the spark plug in the engine bay it wasnt there and i looked in the street and i couldnt find it. should i just try and stick another spark plun in? and since i was really close to home i drove it home 3 min drive. its a '87 325is with the M20 motor

You could try, but if the threads are stripped chances are it will happen again. If it wasnt screwed in fully it could have possibly just messed up the first thread or two still leaving enough bite in the rest to keep it seated.

There's nothing wrong with doing so (Imo it's very good practice actually) , all things have a torque spec for a reason... Spark plugs included

if you need to use a torque wrench to install spark plugs you shouldnt even be touching a motor. END OF STORY.

??? You mean "start stripping the thread"...

For spark plugs, 21lbs/ft is the spec (not really that much). For most people, a tight tug is enough for spark plug.

A good pro that has done this a few hundred times can do it without a torque wrench, but if he/she is good they'll still pull out the torque wrench and do it right.

Spark plugs like the oil drain plug (18ft-lb) are steel parts into aluminum. It is all to easy to damage the threads in the aluminum with too much torque.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
