I'm trying to help a friend troubleshoot an erratic issue with his clutch system. 1989 325is 5 speed (stock master & slaves all around). Thanks in advance for any insight and I apologize for the length, but I figure the more details provided the better.
The physical clutch itself engages and disengages the engine/tranny perfectly fine. However, once driving if you depress the clutch pedal it remains on the floor board about 90% of the time; 10% chance it operates normally. When it remains on the floor, you can reach down by hand or get a small enough foot beside it, and start to pull it back up. Once up about 1/4 of the way, it will actually spring the rest of the way up by itself.
Oddities: At idle or with car off, you can press and release the pedal repeatedly without any issue at all; it never freezes on the floor board.
There is no visible fluid leaking from the master or slaves and there has not been any recent work on brake system or clutch.
A visual check of the pedal box shows that it's in tact with no signs of cracks or misalignment.
Brake pedal operation appears normal to me, although my buddy claims when the issue first started the brake pedal went to the floor on start up, but then operated fine. Again, brake pedal feel and operation appear fine to me. The fluid in the res appears to be at appropriate level.
Anyone experience anything like this?? I'd just like a bit of anything to go on before I start swapping slave cylinders and the like... Thanks again for reading.
