    M42 cam adjustment

    Hi all I´m new to this forum and have a question that haven´t found all over the forum.
    I have an 318is and I´m rebuilding the whole engine, right now, I´m in the process of mounting the timing chain, but my problem comes when I don´t know in which position to set the cams in order to work. I know they cam be set +/-6 degrees and all that, mines are set to zero by now, but I´m not sure in which exact position I should put the cams.
    I know the cams have an arrow and the flywheel a hole that can be locked through the block. As I´ve been told, the arrows should point straight up while crankshaft is at TDC.
    Right now I have it set this way, but I´m thinking my exhaust cam is a tooth off.
    My question is, how can I be sure they are in the right position/tooth in relation to the crankshaft?? Can someone measure in your engine the distance between arrows while pointing up? or even better post a pic of the correct position of the cams?
    Any help would be apreciated.

    By the way, does anyone know who sells alluminum flywheels for the m42 engine??

          Lighten the one you have. Ask around the speed shops.

              First make sure the bottom end is at #1 TDC. Lock the flywheel with that pin or pull the #1 spark plug and feel the piston with a pencil. Then, get a small machinists square and set the arrows perpendicular to the top of the head.


              The lobes for #1 should face each other and up slightly.

                Thank you all so much!!! you saved my butt, and my engine, because as I thought, I was a tooth off. however, the pinstons wouldn´t hit valves turning the crank, at 7000rpm, who knows...
                I´m making a whole project on my white 318is, including head porting, computer mods,etc...
                Actually it started as a 318i, I have rebuilt the entire engine, which I bought in a junkyard here in barcelona, spain, with computer, transmission, the whole wiring of the entire car, plus recaro seats, for 400euros, and the best thing is that it only has 115000kms on it(about 78000miles. I´ve taking pictures of the entire project which I can post if someone is interested.
                Right now I have the engine almost finished, and the car still has the m40 engine which I drive daily.
                Well, let me know If someone is interested in the project and I´ll post pics.
