    crazy revving engine prob

My engine is revving up all by itself sometimes, up to about 3k or 4k rpm, without me actually pressing the gas pedal at all. It doesn't happen often, but it's frequent enough to get on my nerves. Any guesses as to what may be causing this?

Wierd thing is that the engine is ok 95% of the time... anyone?

Small vaccum leak, AFM getting stuck, or your throttle cable could be getting stuck (happened to me twice).

Is the CEL flashing at all when it does this?

I'll rule out my throttle cable getting stuck, since this happens when I'm idling mostly, but thanks for the feedback. I'll check the other two possibilities.

Oh, and no, nothing is flashing when this happens.

If that's the case check the AFM first. It may just need to be cleaned.

Alright. Changed the AFM, changed the ICV, and changed the ECU. Same problem! I also checked all the rubber fittings for vaccuum leaks, nada. Any more suggestions?

Is your floor mat pushed up towards the gas pedal? Sounds crazy I know, but I have heard of this happening a number of times. If the floor mat is not secured at the rear, it will inch it's way up and eventually put pressure on the pedal. As a matter of fact, it just happened to my friends E46 M3.
