hey guys, so my car has been recently over heating. When I sit for a small period of time it starts to get hotter and hotter. I was told to let it get hot and check the fan to see if it starts to skip or get jumpy, it stayed fluent the whole time. Its not the clutch fan nor lack of coolant. Does it sound like my thermostat is going bad because its been slowly getting worse and worse?

Thanks for that info , i actually didn't have any idea how to test my fan clutch , i went mad and i almost swapped to electric fan.
I will Test it tonight .
if it's bad Then Change , if it's good and still over heats , then electric fan is my answer .
Is the electric Fan Better than the clutch one ? And Does it keep the Heat good . even in busy traffic . ?
I know how to Wire it using the relay and the switch also thinking about the E46 one . but i need more info also .

If the clutch isn't the problem you have something else wrong the needs to be fixed. A bad thermostat, clogged radiator, or pump impeller damage are the likely causes in that order. An electric fan might treat the symptoms, but you need to cure the disease. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

It will switch on when the temp switch kicks it on (if engine gets hot idling and there is no airflow). Switching to a different temp range switch can adjust when the AUX fan kicks on.
E30's use the same electric AUX fan for AC and non-AC versions.
If the clutch is worn out the mechanical fan will not function.
If the original e30 mechanical fan and the AUX fan are both functioning and the car still overheats then there may be more issues as they are usually adequate for very hot weather and track use (on grid / pit lane)
Have you verified the thermostat working (or tried running without one)?OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

My AC Is Retro fitted . but the AC Fan does not work when the engine gets hot . it only work when i turn on the AC .
Is there a way to make it also run when the car gets hot without effecting the AC . ?

does the fan get activated by a thermal switch or from the AC button?
in e36 there is a 3 wire switch on the radiator; its avail in different temp settings also as some cars may run no mechanical fan and only use elec fan per climate/country.
thermal switch screwed into the radiator end tank sends high or low power to the fan (or none) depending on temp preset. There are 2 avail for e36 and the E30 uses the same radiator as E36 (I put a PWR e36M rad into e30 race car)OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

My car was overheating at traffic lights. People told me various things like it needed a new radiator. I'm fed up with one of the local independent BMW shops I used to use so I took took it to a general shop that works on everything. Two hours later they callded me to come pick it up. They took off the grilles and cleaned "twenty four years worth of of bugs and debris" off the front of the radiator (this was after the BMW shop flushed th system to no avail). No more overheating. Sometimes it's the simple things.1990 Alpine 325iC.
