88 Super ETA'' Running Lean***Smog Prob

So i purchased a delphin metallic 1988 Super ETA, about 130,xxx OG miles for about a 1000 bux along with a couple other goods, also had good interior. Car is Electrically and mechanically sound from what i know. ive had it for about a week. I bought it knowing that the previous owner had threw the I head on it, is there any advantages or pluses to this ?? I imagine not passing smog has something to do with this ? The smog guy was unaware of the I Head and told me it could be my O2 sensor which actullay has exposed wire right now, If not that he said it could be the Cat. I could easily get it passed wink wink, but he told me it was running lean and that concerns me, i also want my tags lol I want it running Right so anyone that knows anything at all would be of great help. thanks

has nothing to do with the head. I have the same setup (and yes, it adds considerable gains) and I passed (after replacing my o2) with no problem. I posted a thread about it awhile back, compare my results with yours.

Check sparkplug gap? Maybe an injector isn't fully firing? I have a super eta as well.

Hmmm.... HC close to max, CO low,
NOx is off the charts. Check the valve adjustment as well.
And it looks like the Cat needs a litter box.

If you bought the car I think you bought, the guy put an I head but left the E electronics including AFM and intake manifold. Maybe that could change things? Idk.

Running lean generally means you have vacuum leak.

Of course a non working o2 sensor could cause issues. That's a maintenance item anyway.

If the car has an i head check that it has the other i parts. Did he switch to the i FPR, injectors, AFM, ECU, intake manifold, and throttle body? The Super Eta parts are different. Combining the i head with the Super Eta stuff could result in lean running conditions. Otherwise check and replace spark plugs, cap, and rotor as needed. (And I'm sure it needs them...)

To the people posting "OMG California sucks" your replies are worthless. Smog isn't a big deal if your car is running right. My i swapped 325eS just passed with flying colors on Monday.

Yes. Downey. I talked to him over the phone because I wanted to potential buy the car/engine.

To my knowledge from speaking to him over the phone, he did not replace those items! Just the head. Idk why. Says he has all the parts too.
