    Conflicting Voltages?

So I was browsing the ETM for the e36 (early build date) in order to trouble shoot megasquirt wiring. My current issue is that when I go to turn the fuel pump on the relay doesn't ground. I can get the relay to click over by jumping the ground on it and there is continuity between the fuel pump pin and the relay.
I noticed that in the ETM pin 54 is run as a switched 12v, and that the fuel pump relay also has a 12v going to it, but pin 1 is supposed to provide the ground. Am I missing something here?

Where does the harness get the ground for the fuel pump relay from?

The ETM controls the relay. If the engine dies, in a wreck for instance, the ETM turns off the fuel pump for safety purposes.

Slight correction, it is the DME that controls the relay. And to elaborate, the DME grounds the relay coil when it sees timing data from a rotating engine.
I have no idea whether an MS has that capability.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
