    God damn half-shafts....

I bought 2 refurb. halfshafts from BMA, and I'm having one hell of a time trying to get them installed.

I've been hammering the shit out of it for the past 2 hours, and it's barely moving.

The splines are just not co-operating, and I can only manage to get it inserted about 1/2". I still need about another 1" so I can install the nut...

I'm using a large hand-held sledge (10lb?) and I'm giving the outer cv joint a beating, but it's just not moving.

Is there some special puller I'm supposed to be using to get outer cv splines into the wheel hub?

God damn this is a pain....

They should NOT require pounding like that. I would take the stub back out and look closely at the splines, make sure you havent' damaged them or maybe the splines were damaged when they sent them. Once you get the splines lined up, the stub axle should go in pretty easily- it might take some light tapping, but if you're hitting it hard with a 10 lb sledge- you better hope you have not damaged it.

Yeah... when we installed Spoon's 325 halfshafts into his 318, they slipped right in. Something's amiss.

Yeah, installing mine only took light tapping to get them all the way in. Make sure the splines are still in good shape.

I made sure all the splines were good, and lubed 'em up too.
The old ones took a bit of a pounding to get out.... but I thought they all did.

I can't see what could be the problem, everything is clean, but she's not moving.
Maybe I need to get my hands on some liquid nitrogen to shrink the splines....

            Alright...
What's the difference between ABS and non-ABS halfshafts? Is it possible that I have the wrong part?

I tried putting the old one back in, and it went in with a bit of hammering, but nothing like what I was giving the new ones.
So I guess I'll assume that there is something wrong with these.

ABS shafts have the toothed ring on them, non-ABS do not. Should not affect the splines fitting in the hub if you have the "wrong" shafts- but I've had clearance problems installing the ABS hubs in the non-ABS trailing arms- only once they were installed did the problem become apparent.

Ok, well my car doesn't have ABS and these shafts do not have the ring on them. So it seems like they may be the right ones, but they don't fit...

Compare them to the old ones. Do you notice anything different?

Doesn't seem to have any mechanical difference.

I had to take a hand file to every spline on my remanned axles. I was having the same issues as you and hammering didn't work and only damaged rings and seals. When they reman it there's a paint or some coating on the splines so file off the tops and sides of each spline with a triangular file. Clean all the shavings off real good, lube then install. If it doesn't fit, get the file back out and do it again.
