I've been looking at the same tunability issues and at this point, MS or VEMS appear to be the best options. VEMS seems to be more flexible in terms of its compatibility with the E30 since it can control timing out of the box, whereas the MS needs to have a machined crank wheel to work well. VEMS also already incorporates WB and with a good guage, you'll be able to do some pretty decent tuning without a dyno. VEMS is a bit more expensive, but based on what I've seen, to get the MS up to the same level, you'll come pretty close in costs.

They use the same tuning software so the interface is a non-issue. I have a complete MS unit I was going to install but now I'm rethinking the whole thing after reveiwing the VEMS info. Although the documentation isn't as solid in terms of organization, its all there if you dig hard enough.

Well he bought a SMT7 unit,
He will be able to tune ignition to his needs with stock components, and if he wants he can run standalone ignition like all normal standalones,

SMT7 has a special help to install a MAF without problems and thats what hes going to use, the SMT7 auto adjust the MAF signal until it´s the same output as the AFM, obviously running them serial to begin with,
then remove the AFM and fine tune the MAF,

Results : any fuel adjustments, any ignition
        just like a standalone.

Does the SMT7 allow you to drop the MAF/AFM altogether? Also, how is ignition and fuel managed (interface wise)?

            Laptop tuned,
Also possible is a tuning map switch, ie. you can change maps while driving,

You can run a MAP if you want, but with a 307 cam like he has it´s not exactly going to idle nice,

converting to a MAP would be even easier, as you can have both physically installed while you make the SMT7 adjust the output for the MAP sensor,
then you just swap the output wires and run on the MAP

GST, you're my man :D He just arranged to have an SMT-7 delivered to me today, and when it arrives, the SERIOUS tuning can begin.

I'd imagine you're pretty much stuck with a chip that is estimated by a good tuner to suit your specs.
Isnt a dyno just a sophisticated way of simulating driving down the street?

You cant tune for ultimate high horsepower, but you can tune it for driveability and generally getting it running right.

You know, so you can drive to the dyno.
