325i e30 vert electrical problem need help

My 1990 vert has an unusual problem that I'm trying to pin down. I put the key in the ignition and turn - nothing. Turn the key a second time - dash lights and radio on - Turn the key a third time and car will start nicely. I'm tracing all the possible wiring breaks, but I could use some brainstorming about where to go after that. My overhead interior light doesn't work now, nor does the glove box light, but the glove box flashlight is charging. Brand new battery as of Thursday. Thanks for any suggestions.

When you say "Turn the key a second time" do you mean the position of the key? Or you have to keep trying it before anything happens?

I turn the key to the "on" position, then back as if I was going to take the key out, then turn it to the "on" position, then back as if I was going to take they key out. Third time seems to be the charm. Thanks.

This happened to me recently when the postive on the battery terminal came loose.
Might not be the case but would certainly start from there.

Thanks, Fusion. Took the old battery out and put a new one in and checked all the terminals, but maybe I should check where the battery cables attach at the other end - something might be loose. Or just put new cables on.

That sounds to me like a flaky ignition switch.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
