Sell it and buy a 325i.

Why? Especially if he has a good shell to start with. Not like it's an overly expensive or complicated swap.

As far as the swap goes, there's not much if anything you can reuse. Maybe the radiator and differential. You're basically swapping the entire drivetrain here.

Understood. It's pretty much bolt in and plug and play if you get the right loom/ecu (maybe you'll have issues with pin 20 on the c101) but generally with the way these threads go is; if you have to ask, it's beyond your abilities.

        EDIT:
Also, there really isn't much of your old engine/driveline set up you can reuse; maybe the radiator if you want the cleaner look. You'll need pretty much the entire driveline from a 325i. Drive shaft, gearbox, shifter, exhaust, engine, engine mounts, ecu, loom, afm etc. Unless you search for the deals, or get a decently priced complete conversion, you may well have been better off just selling the 318i and getting a 325i.

i have done swaps before but i wat to use the tranny from my m42 because its a 5 speed and the one off the m20 is auto. ik it will sit a little off but idc as long as it works. should i use the driveshaft off the m42 or the m20?

I don't think the getrag 240 transmission on the M42 will bolt up to the M20. You're probably better just getting a getrag 260 and I think you'll need a manual 325i drive shaft.
