    Weird engine power issue

So every now and again as of late the power in my car will cut out past 2000 rpm if I'm in a higher gear like third or fourth. My external fuel pump has been making a lot of noise which I think might be the cause. It happens intermittently and only when I'm in the higher rpms and the power will just cut when it gets bad the revs just don't go up and the engine is still running. I tried replacing the fuel pump today but after I tried starting it the pump itself started pouring out fuel. So after putting the old pump back in im still having the problem. Any ideas?

Crucial things to know, that you failed to tell us are the year and model of the car and what pump (new OE or used) you tried.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I have a 87 325e, the pump that is in it is an OE pump and so is the replacement I tried to use

The one I tried to put in is also used but the seller indicated that is was a working pump...

Where was the fuel coming from? The housing of the pump itself?

You're in Cali, there are billions of e30's with trillions of parts available. Just try another one.
