fuel door release on car without central locking.

Quick Q! The central locking is totally shot on my car so I'm in the process of removing the actuators and module. On earlier cars that don't have central locking, does the fuel door still have a latch and if so is it opened manually? OR does the gas cap have a lock and the door lacks a latch to lock it shut?

The door itself has no latch. An over center spring holds it open or closed. The OE gas cap is not a locking type.
