hrm. Blower motor shit teh bed?

When I picked up the cabbie in November, I never tried the heat, but at the meet on the 20th, I did, and nothing happened when I tried the knob.

Dave assured me it was working before he passed it on my way, and I believe him. So what happened?

Today I FINALLY got to work on the cabby. Thank god. Poor fucking car has been sitting there for 4 months untouched aside from moving from the barn to the garage and back a few times.

Anyways, I took the HVAC panel off and swapped switches, with no luck. Fuses all look good too.

u getting power to the switch? that would be first on my list. I just got a car a few weeks ago that the blower didnt work, and i wasnt getting any power. I found a wire under the steering colum(big green one) with ign. power, and jumped it to the blower motor wire, and it worked. So i left it like that.

forgive me. the meter I had died, it's 4 am, and I'm not at the car. To make things easier for my feeble brain, remind me which wire the blower wire is, and where to find le big green wire.

      I wonder what happened.

Now I'm fucking heated. (or not, literally.)

Finally got the car out and about today, and hit a random bump. Lo and behold, the blower kicks on. Ok, great - I guess. Sure enough, it turns itself back off later on in the day. So tonight I was fuddling with the radio wiring, etc, and all of a sudden the thing starts working again - turn the car off and on a few times, sure enough, works fine, at all speeds. I think it must have something to do with some wires I saw coming off the radio wires that had been cut but not taped, as this was the only thing I really messed with.

Get everything all wired up for the radio - voila, no more blower.

Fuddling with everything in that area and underdash responded with no change. I'm once again without a blower.

        WTF?

                BimmerFanatik,

My 318is had the same problem around 200k. Blower stopped working---occasionally it would kick on during a bumpy right-hand corner (sometimes just a high-G corner). I replaced it (not until 240k, ha) and it has been trouble-free.

mine's dying a slow death, and it works sporadically and squeals on high-g corners. My money's on the fan itself being bad.

i really need to get a new one, but $150 is a lot :p

Scotty, I'd say either spend the time testing w/ a meter OR just swap blowers. You can test the switch but I bet its getting power, then you'd have to get into the blower compartment anyhow to test there. I'm sure you have nemerous othe good blowers to throw in

I would only spend the $$ on a brand new one IF your planing on doing a engine swap. (cause after any bigger motor there like no chance of being able to get to the blower) Other then that I would just buy a good used one. I pick one up for my first e30 from The Euro depot guys.

good call, but i got a used one from ebay and one of the hamster wheels was cracked :( i'd be worried about that with any used piece, as they seem very brittle

i'll check into it though, the squealing is driving me nuts!! :pimp:

                          Not your meter, mark.

If there's some breaks in the plastic wheels, can you still use it??

                            Now I'm right fucking pissed.

Dug out every last wire bunch under there. Found no loose grounds, frayed wires, or anything out of place.

Completely dead blower and mirrors. Won't come back on even with bumps.

I'm furious, and I want a solution. Please help me! :)

PS - the only other thing I noticed was that the mirrors are fuse 19 and the blower fuse 20 - maybe a coincidence, maybe not?

I am NO good with electrical stuff.

I do recall once having a stretch of a couple days when the mirrors would not work. Before I tried to chase down the problem, they started working again.

Maybe the fuse block itself has some issue?
