mineral vs. synthetic

I've got ~156k miles on my m20, my rear main seal is leaking like crazy... so I thought about switching to mineral oil instead of running synthetic... what pro's con's do both have? What longetivety both have? Is it going to be better off running synthetic in the long run?

If you change the oil regular with mineral it won't make a diff. But get the seal changed out soon.

It can't hurt to try regular (non-synthetic) oil to see if the leak slows down some.

In my experience, regular or synthetic doesnt' matter as much as regular oil changes. Most of the oil-related engine failures I've seen were due to not changing the oil frequently enough OR running the car low on oil (or in some cases- OUT of oil....).

Synthetic is better for high stress applications, like heavy towing or racing/track. There may be some benefit to running it in a daily driver, but I think you have to factor in the additional cost of synthetic oil vs regular oil over the life of the engine, and I think they come out about even...
