    help! starter

So i need help indentifing the wires and what cause my starter to catch on fire. (background info) only thing done to it recently was wash the engine bay (always done it frequently). i drive it for a 30+ min drive after 20mins of drying. and lend car to my older bro (tons of bad luck with him recently) he drive it for 10 mins says he hears a loud noise, calls me if i have any know noises (i do tob). keeps driving till he sees smoke then pull over and extingushes fire from starter. gets home replaces starter with working unit off vert and doesnt wire it correctly and now it turns on but he says it smoked a lil after a drive.

Not sure if it was new one is wired correctly, and one wire is not connected/ missing connector (yellow/black?) so i need to know what color wire go where and what can cause my issue along with windows, mirror motors, and blower motor not turning on.
    thanks in advance.

A smoking starter that works, or sorta works, will be one that has an internal short.

The windows and blower not working means that the unloader switch in the starter; is bad, not connected, or not present. Early starters (through 8/87) don't have an unloader switch in the starter, so it is possible that the starter on the car now is missing the switch.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

The starter i replaced it with came off my vert with was running( no starter now). The only issue i have now is a i need a pic or discription of the wiring on the starter, since one is not connected and some electrical stuff doesnt work.

Since i did not replace it.

The big stud on the starter gets the main battery cable and the red wire from the alternator. The black/yellow wire goes to the solenoid control stud and the brown wire to the unloader switch stud. The solenoid and unloader studs are slightly different diameters, so it isn't hard to figure out which wire goes where by the lug size.
