    Differential / axles NOISE...help plz

Hey guys. I was doing some spirited driving in the rain two days ago and everything was going well untill i drifted the rear of the car into some dirt on the side (road-2ft level sandy terrain- ~leveled concrete walkway) and i believe the driver's rear tire touched the walkway too.

Anyways, the car was perfect before that and now i have an ugly noise coming from the rear of the car that's scaring the ******** out of me. I describe it as a clunking noise whos intensity increases with speed and ONLY makes noise when the clutch is not engaged (moving in N, b/ shifting)

I feel it is RIGHT ON THE DIFF....i had a similar problem with my old corolla (ae86 rwd) when i put an LSD unit and didnt align the gears well...but it could be something else. I looked under the car, everything looks okay (suspension okay, diff/suspension bushings look healthy enough), rusty diff (could peel layers of rust), rustly axles-diff connections...visually sane.

What do you think it is? I have enough exp and ability to swap out a diff (might as well get the lsd). should i jack the rear and run the car?. I just want to know IF the noise even comes from the diff. Spirited driving included just a few agressive gear drops and clutch kiks but i'm no animal and i'm very concious of my car.

looking forward to hear from you. ty

i would check that wheel out right now... check the lug nuts on all four wheels and take the wheel off that got knocked, check it out, and then put it back on. I'm 90% that's it.

A diff heading south makes a whining noise... a clunking from the rear when you're not accelerating sounds to me like a loose wheel.

you were right. there wasnt any sign of me hopping the walkway, but for some very odd reason the lug nuts (screws) were loose. also need some air 'cause my threadless tires are looking a little flat.

this is a result of that night...the tire made sparks in the dryer spots. good thing our cars have a full size spare:

lol, i'm really not a road hazzard, the e30 is my toy. i daily drive another car.
