The reasson you can unlock from the trunk, is Central locking system. Its pretty much like power locks. Its not uncommon on e30's for the door locks to crew up and the trunk work.
Whish I could help more, but I dont have any advice on fixing the door locks

If using the trunk does not work,

        1.) check all fuses

2.) there is a computer under/behind the drivers front speaker. You will need to remove the speaker, then look down. There will be a plastic panel.
        Pull that up/out.

Under it is a black box, remove the electronic box.
That is the computer for the central locking system. A circuit usually burns out and can somtimes be soldered or just replace the whole thing.

can you just delete the "central locking system" and run all manual locks and then not have problems with this BS?

I would imagine you could, but why? They are a very convient feature especially when running keyless entry/alarm

Can you manually unlock either door with the key? If not, you may have a lock cylinder that is broken and needs to be replaced. BMW sells a rebuild kit for the E30 door locks that you need to assemble yourself to match your existing key. It has crappy instructions in German that are really not much help. Check out the two links below:

Dud...have you checked if your battery has any juice??

'cause with no battery, you get no locks. Get it checked or "jump start" your battery and you'll get the locks
                    No more e30s for me.

I bought a rebuild kit for my drivers door about nine months ago, put a keyless entry/alarm system and have never got around to fixing the original problem with my drivers door lock. No real burning need to tear the door apart again, and it is a real PITA to get that damn lock out of a four door. The smaller doors make things a little tight.

At least you can open the doors. One of my two keys broke off in the driver's side lock cylinder last winter.
