    SRS check light

I have taken out my airbag and now I have the dreaded SRS check light stuck on in my car. I have searched around and found that most people just unsolder the bulb to cure the problem. The other option seems to be send the car to the dealer to reset the system. What does the dealer do to reset the system? They have to have a pretty simple reset procedure. Does anyone work at a dealer and know how to reset this beast. I am sure they have special tool #2368291 that just shorts a couple of wires or something stupid like that. Anyone know how to get rid of this light?

You permenantly removed the airbag? You'll have to get rid of teh light bulb then- can't reset it if there's a missing componant. The whole point of the light is to tell you that there's somthing not right with the system

Heh I guess I was a little vague... sorry bout that. Yeah I put the airbag back in. I had to take the wheel off but everything is hooked up again. Correctly I hope. Now I just cant get rid of the SRS check light and from what I read the only way to turn it off is to take it to a dealer.

I have the same problem. I just popped the bulb and put a piece of black tape over the back of the check panel in its spot.
        Back to my roots

That seems to be the most common approach. I am just wondering what the shop does to get it to go out. There has to be a way to resest it. Anyone know how to do this or know someone at a shop that has done it?

I work at a dealer, we use the factory DIS/GT1 diagnosis computer. We just hook the car up and clear the faults.

It would cost you the minimum shop charge of 60 dollars.

I have heard of people disconneting the pos battery cable and touching the
cable end to the neg turminal of the batter draining all the compasitors and
wiping out the faults. Not shure it this works. Make shure you follow my instructions closely because if you mess up you could possibly explode the battery shooting acid all over(trust me this stuff burns).

In the future do not turn the key on with the airbag disconnected, that way you can avoid all this.

I tried a dealer and a top local indy to no avail. Peake sez the baud rate for resetting these early systems were very slow and have no relationship to modern sytems. I can get the faults codes to read out and the're all due to temporary interupt as your having. After trying EVERYTHING I installed a non-srs check panel.

If there is a fault in the system the airbag won't fire.

I thought on most systems if there are truly no faults, the SRS light will shut off. Are you sure the bag is plugged in?

You might as well ditch the airbag wheel for something better, if you can't reset the light or fix the problem.

That baud rate stuff must only apply to aftermarket scanners because I work at a dealer and have no problems working on early air bag systems. If the fault is current clearing it will not work. 9 out of 10 air bag lights on early systems are caused by the clock/glock spring( the washer looking thing that the big pin rides on).

Anyway sounds like you fixed your problem with the srs light.

Btw any dealer that cant figure this out does not deserve your money.
Make a road trip up to Minneapolis if you want it fixed right!

Edit: I just relized you are located in minneapolis, let me gess motorworks couldnt figure out your problem.
You should swing by Sears Imported Autos and ask for Peter I will be able to get to the bottom of your srs Light.
In fact I am working on saterday from 9-3.
You should swing in it would be cool to see your car in person!

According to my converstions with Peake technicians and the mechanics at the dealer and a local indy, on these early systems, they store even temporaty interuptions. The bags are still armed and will fire so long as the fault is not "perminant" like a broken sensor or such. I do not plan to put it to the test though.

                    Knocks wood.

Thanks for the info. I am going to try this stuff out tomorrow. If I cant get it to clear then I will just swing by Sears when you are there sometime.

Does everyone know that there are 3 ORANGE plugs under the bolster on the driver's side that you unplug and the light goes off??? I did this on my '91 when I swapped to an Mtech1 wheel and totally removed the SRS computer and the light is off for good.

                          Will

EDIT: Nevermind. I thought you swapped wheels and the light stayed on. Didn't know you wanted to keep the airbag wheel.
