    engine burning lots of coolant

There is quite a bit of white smoke comming out of my m42 318 and coolant actaully dripping from the exhaust. What could be wrong? the head was just rebuild because someone overheated it. It looks like it has a little less oil too but that could just be beacause the engine has been ran. Could i take it back to the shop that rebuild the head and tell them to fix it?

    thanks

Sounds if the head was installed wrong or the head is slightly warped. Bring it back and say you payed for them to fix it properly the first time. Not twice.

ok i just took it for another test drive and it was still smoking but there was no coolant dripping out like before so im thinking it might just be coolant thats in the exhaust pipes. After it cools down i should be able to fill the coolant up and get all of it out of the pipes so i will be able to tell if its burning it or not. I think the popping noise might be a timing issue or maybe because of bad gas. It makes the popping noise when im on the gas esecially up hills

This doesn't sound good to me, have your car checked by people who did the head job!

for your info it was just a buncha old coolant that was in the exhaust pipes i guess because it doesnt do it anymore

unfortunatly a plastic water maniflod thing broke becuase it was so brittle. i guess from when it over heated. at least i got in a couple hours of hard driving tho

and does the timing somehow need to be set to the distrubutor thing?

could you show me where is the distributor in that engine? maybe it was a special M42 Project that you got, who knows!? :P

The white smoke is signal that is leaking coolent inside the cylinders, take out the head and check it, the same happened to me...

                      good luck

What Charlie is getting at is you need to read your bentley manual for your car and understand the concept of it.

Yor car has a coil pack ignition system, aka distributer free. It's located on the passenger side.

M42's don't have fucking distributors. Or things, or a combo of either.
