My A/C is just plain lame. It checks out OK on the guages but doesn't move enough air over the condensor. It doesn't really start to cool until after you are at speed for a while. In the shop you can put a big fan in front of the car and the temp drops. I have replaced the little electrical thingy on the fan mounting bracket. Most of the A/C's in E30's I have ridden in leave a bit to be desired. Mine is diamonschwarz w/black interior in Texas. Am I doomed to envying the Toyoto Camry's of the A/C world?

Does your auxilliary cooling fan run when you have your A/C on? Does it kick up to fast after a while? Sounds to me like your switch is defective............

Does the high side increase then decrease as the fan turns on? Is the fan even turning on? Low side should be around 28-35 lbs. to get the lowest temps. Even though the car isnt moving, you should have cold air blowing out of the vents, just not quite as cold. If you have a pyrometer temp gauge, probe the condensor at the inlet and look for a temp drop at the outlet. If there is little or no drop, then I would try cleaning the condensor, maybe removing it and flushing it out.
You might as well convert to r134a if you have to open the system. Replace the reciever dryer as well.Old and improved:

When you turn on the AC, the AUX fan will come on but not at high speed. If your fan is kicking into high speed then you have bigger fish to fry (and you probably could on your overheating engine) ;)
