I just pulled the bumpers off an 89 last weekend and it had 10mm Allen bolts, definitely not torx. (nice flat sides, no star shape) If by any chance you're planning on taking the bumpers to swap onto an 88 by any chance make sure you also take the front and rear mounts (13mm bolts), the clips that hold the ends of the bumpers close to the body, (10mm bolts/nuts), and cut off the front turn signal bulb plugs with a couple of inches of wire to splice into the exisiting wiring of the older model.

i just pulled the bumpers off a 91 325i and it had 10mm HEX, not T-55 TORX.
