This is how fuel pump failed.

The brushes are gone. I stretched the springs a little and it still spins when hooked up to 12v. This is the in-tank pump from the early models and I have been running on the external pump for at least 2 years. I replaced with oe vdo pump and realized how noisy the pump was.

I'm very surprised the pump lasted until the brushes wore out. Usually the bushings go bad before this happens and the pump starts whining.

uhm, never replaced internal pump, (the tank due to stupidity ?, well ;P )
external has been buzzing a bit ( about 1 year old).
