    occasional no start

hey everyone i have an 87 325es and every now and then it won't start.... it will crank all day but no start.
once roll started the car runs as good as ever every time. i can live with this problem but obviously would like to fix it.
when the problem occurs the car is getting fuel and appears to have no spark, my mind is telling me its the crankshaft position sensor but i can't check the sensor for power when the car is working the way it is supposed to..

so my question is has anyone ever had this intermittent no start problem, or could anyone point me in the right direction? your help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as checking the CPS, you can do with a multimeter.

Disconnect the harness side of the CPS - check the resistance across two of the three pins. One pin is the shield, but there is no way to know which is which, so check all combinations of two.

The resistance should read ~540 ohms (+/- something like 20 ohms). Something like that, the exact specs are in the Bentley or you can google them.

yes but wouldn't the sensor ohm out correctly when it is in working order? that would mean i would have to wait for it to have the no start problem before i can attempt to solve the problem

When you say "appears" to have no spark, are you sure? Another overlooked cause of this is a faulty OBC relay, if you have the 13-button OBC with the "code" anti-theft function. It disables the ignition system. Cut and splice the green and red/green wires together, bypasses it. Voila!

Yes, I would expect it to test OK. I would guess that the intermitted no start is likely not due to your CPS. (though it could be, only way to be sure is to replace it).

I was just answering your question about how to test the CPS.
