My Car won't turn over. HELLLLP!!

    Hey guys
I'm fairly new to the e30 world so bear with me. I was driving my 325ix the other day and it was running just fine. I did notice a slight hesitation when in first when it wasn't warm. It would act like it wanted to bog down and then it would be fine after a few starts in 1st gear. So after about 10 mins or so of driving I was coming to a stop and all of a sudden it just died. It didn't putter, it didn't lurch, it just faded out. I tried to fire it up again and it would crank and crank but wouldn't turn over. I thought it was the fuel pump and I took it to a mechanic I knew and they said it's getting fuel pressure and a crank signal but still nothing. Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be??

I suggest that you have a smoke test done. For the car to start, you need to have the correct fuel:air ratio. It looks like you have fuel and sparks so your air must be off. Have you check your compression?

      ^^ what he said..do a compression test

Actually getting crank signal does not mean that there is actually spark from the plugs. Pull one by one and ground to the engine block or head (bare metal to the electrode) and crank it while someone watches for the spark to jump the gap. Do that for all plugs. Its pretty quick to do. Reseat the plug connection to the coil where it plugs in. Unplug it , inspect and replug. Vacuum leaks typically exhibit a sputter or lurch so it may not be that . Check the boot that goes to the throttle body for cracks and leaks. Move it back and forth to check for hidden cracks. Post results.

Hey, thanks a lot for the responses! I did some more research and talked to the mechanics next door to where I work and they said its getting injector pulse and the crank sensor is fine. They think its an electrical issue because it won't spark when the key is turned to on but it will get spark when the you're turning the key off. Do you guys think it's the ignition switch? Or a faulty wire somewhere?

You may be another victim of a faulty OBC relay......ignition signal passes through there from ignition switch to ecu. No signal= no spark.

Compression wouldn't just instantly go away and make the car not run.

Ignition switch is a possibility, but you would likely not be able to get it to crank at all.

Pull the plugs and see if you are getting spark. From there check for vacuum leaks. The intake boot likes to tear. Pull it off and flex it while looking for cracks/tears.

Cranking and turning over are one and the same. You mean the car wouldn't fire. What happens if you give the car a little throttle?
