Hello all, the e30 is yet again delivering more confusing problems as any good BMW does. So basically my car is getting terrible gas mileage - around 14 - 15mpg city and if I had to guess 20 highway (my gas meter is broken). It's absolutely killing me. On top of that, there's problems with hesitation or sputtering under acceleration. This has been happening for about as long as I've owned the car (November 2013). When this hesitation occurs the MPG gauge falls all the down to in between the '5' and '0' - I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but it isn't true for other BMW's I've owned.
Now here's a few things:
1.) The gas tank has a hole in it and leaks fuel if it is filled over a third of a tank. For this reason - and I know I should fix this but the car started as a winter beater; I have never filled it past that point.
2.) When accelerating, my CEL (check engine light) comes on and will then fade a couple of seconds after or as soon as I let up off of the throttle.
What I've done: I went ahead and did the adjustment to the AFM where you bend the copper sweeper arm etc, etc. I've also unplugged my o2 sensor, I haven't driven more than a few blocks with it unplugged so I haven't caught the check engine light coming on but it still is sputtering under acceleration.
So here are my questions: Could it be possible that a hole in the gas tank could cause some lack of pressure for the fuel and cause a reoccurring hesitation such as the one I described? Is it commonplace for poor acceleration to be linked to bad gas mileage?
Any and all input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
