325iX Questions.

Hey guys I'm new here and a new e30 owner. I got an 89 325iX about a month ago and haven't had any problems with it until just the other day.
I cleaned some of the motor this weekend and now the MPG gauge is acting funny. I checked if I accidentally unplugged or moved anything without knowing and i cant find anything out of the ordinary (for me). It is stuck on 5 when I'm on the gas, when i let off it jumps all the way to 40+ like it should. I do feel like it was burning more gas than normal but that could just be me being paranoid. I'll post pics.

Also I'm a noob on m20s. I'll post a video of my car running once i figure out how to get it off my iPhone, but it seems to me like there is a lot of clicking going on, like the a/c compressor is cutting on and off it happens constantly while driving but like I said I'm a noob when it comes to these cars. So it could just be normal.


Any help would be great !

that gauge is operated by a logic board which is part of the service indicator in the cluster using inputs from the ECU so i dont know how anything you did in the engine bay would affect it and not affect the ECU not working/sending out correct data to cluster , my guess is the batteries are going bad on the SI board causing this issue (it can cause some strange effects when it goes bad) .i bet other things will start occurring soon like an erratic tach ...

the second pic you posted is just the broken plastic retainer for the cruise control cable which will have nothing to do with this either
