New guy here - had my '84 e30 for 20 years, just getting her running again. Levent has done much of the heavy lifting, but I'm trying to take care of some odds and ends.
The car had sat with fuel in the tank for 12 years, so there is def. some gunk in the works.
New 'in tank' fuel pump (pickup screen is not clogged). New external pump, and new filters & pulse dampened.
Now, the problem: the main pump (external) keeps getting clogged up on the inlet screen, which makes it strain, makes a loud whine, and the car doesn't rev much past 2k rpm - doesn't pull when going up hill, etc. I've cleaned the intake screen, and that solves my problem for about 5 miles - car runs fantastic and pulls strong, only to get clogged back up.
I suspected initially there was gunk from the tank that was clogging the screen, but when I pull the in tank pump, the pickup screen is very clean, and it's very fine. It's hard to believe that the external pump is getting clogged by stuff that is making it past the in tank pump.
I'm trying to figure out where all this gunk is coming from, and I want to be darn sure that the tank is really the culprit before I spend the money on a new tank.
Does anyone have any ideas of places that gunk might be coming from? Am I wrong about thinking that the screen on the in tank pump is fine enough to eliminate the tank crud as the problem?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
