How noisy should my fuel pump be?

So yesterday while messing with the idle control setup left me by the PO I noticed my fuel pump seems kinda loud. Is this normal or should I pick up a new one. I am assuming it is my fuel pump making the noise as it is just behind the driver door (1984 318i)

could be a sign that it's on it's way out.

i bought a bosch unit from BMAparts and it came out to around $150 and it's quiet again.
I've tried a TRE and a walbro as a replacement for the same external pump location and they're kinda on the loud side too. I personally prefer the bosch unit since it's quieter as an external.

Also, get under the car and check to make sure the rubber "vibration dampers" aren't all disintegrated on the bracket.

You should only be able to hear the pump from next to it with the engine running. A noisy pump is one that is having to work too hard or is worn. In this case a problem with the in-tank transfer pump or a clogged filter are possibles.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Thanks for the info. I'm will plan on changing both pumps out. With over 250k on the odo I'm sure one/both are pretty worn out.

          500k, mine's still original.

Check both the internal pickup and external fuel filters before jumping to the "Just replace the pumps" conclusion.

Good idea. Good to know these might have some life left in them.

Mine was making a lot of noise. (whirring, but not consistent) I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and the pump stopped making noise and the car ran way better.

Is the noise at idle or while driving?
