I have an issue with my 1986 325es. I am not really sure what it is, and I am a bit worried at this point. Basically, whenever I brake in gear, it makes a lound clunk seeming to come out of the rear. I accelerate and I can vaguely hear it. But I sense it is there. If I turn left or right, the sound is even stronger. I have figured out this only happens IN GEAR. I push the clutch in and it immediately stops. Pull it out, and the sound comes in again. I am hoping it isn't a huge problem where it is going to cost me thousands, like a new differential or, at thw worst, a new transmission. Please let me know your input. I will be taking it in to my high school class to look at it. Thank you!

Agree with Jim, start with the entire rear suspension - shocks/mounts, subframe bushings, etc. The way you describe it though, could be driveline related or a combination.Estoguy
