I always skip 3rd gear in the M3, because I can break any speed limit in the state in 2nd gear :)

I've been known to do 1st to 4th also :)

We ship exhaust systems all the time with UPS, along with multiple other packages. We've never had a single issue with handling and or service.

The alleged handling issues generally fall into the packaging persons fault. For example, we had a big case diff sent to us from California. It was:
      1) Bolted to wooden boards using factory mounting points
2)Inside a plastic Milk crate with wooden reinforcement top and bottom
3)Metal strapping surrounding the package to ensure it was solid
4)Tapped over the metal straps to allow label affixing and to keep other objects from penetrating the milk crate.

Diff arrived perfectly fine, not broken, on time, with no complaints.

Morale of the story, if its big, if its heavy, if it can break other stuff, package it accordingly.
