    Fuel Pump Failure?

This summer, my 88 325is started to develop a slow start issue. It took a few seconds of cranking to start. A few days ago, on a rainy, chilly morning, the car would not start at all. Yesterday was pretty warm and sunny out and I tried to start it again and it fired right up.

However, this evening it would not start. I pulled the cover to the fuel pump and turned the key into the on position but could not hear the pump operating when I put my ear up to it with a screw driver. When I tried cranking the engine, I could hear the pump make a whirring/whine noise for about a second and that's it.

I'm hoping this is the obvious answer, but is the fuel pump dead? I have replaced the fuel pressure regulator and coolant temperature sensor. Other than possibly a couple other sensors related to starting, it seems the issue is fuel supply related.

    Thanks in advance!

sounds like what happened to mine... sometimes my car would start and sometimes it didn't but when it started it didn't last long. i tried many things and it was a simple puel pump replace and cost me about 130-175 and an hour of labor.

I tested the fuel pump by jumping the relay and the fuel delivery rate was right on spec. The relay is brand new so I know that's not the issue. Now it's on to testing for spark...

fuel pressure regulator could also be the culprit. im experiencing same issue with slow start and dying. i had to replace fuel pump, but if im low on gas it still wants to die right after starting. that obnoxious FPR it a common issue im told

Also, I think the crank position sensor, sends a signal to the DME to send spark, which also tells the DME to trigger the fuel pump. If your fuel pump turns off and then turns off, you may not be getting spark or your CPS is not sending the signal
