    Weight of a Shift Knob

I have been searching around for this topic but can't find it. I have seen accouple people ask about the weight of knobs and am wondering, How does the weight of a knob help with shifting? Does it just give a better feel?

I have my SSK and I have a new boot now I just need a new knob. These are the two I am looking to buy. One is sugnificantly less money and I am really leaning toward it.

The weighted knobs are supposed to help take the notchiness out of the shorter throw SSKs.

But whatever tickles your pickle I guess..

How can I tell if the knob is weighted? And if anyone would like to comment on the two knobs I am looking at please feel free to do so.

        Thanks

Stick with some nice leather OEM ///m knob. Those, imo, look the best and there is one weighted one that i know of and i have it and love it.

"Weighted" just means it's on the heavy side. Not rocket science at all.

Of the two knobs you showed, I'm pretty sure the Hamann one costs stupid money, and the other one looks to be just as nice. I'd say go for the other one, unless you're getting a good deal on the Hamann.

That said, I have that OEM ///M weighted leather knob from an e46 330Ci and I love it.

            Hope that helped

There's an OEM weighted shift collar you can buy that will remove all worries about the knob being heavy or not.

on the same subject does anyone know where to buy the OEM shift knob, and boot? I haven't really been searching for one, but I know that I need one.

I understand what it is to be weighted, like you said its not rocket science but I didn't know that there was the sugnificant of a difference that you could really feel the contrast of weight on a weighted and non-weighted knob. Yea I was thinking of going with the first on. It is $20.00 shipped and I just contacted a guy that sells hamann and it was 109.00 but he can get it for me for 100.00. Haha what a steal.

I just want a knob so I don't have to put my oem shitty one on with my nice boot.

personally i can't stand the weighted knobs, especially the metal ones. those get stupid hot in the summer. the extra weight makes me feel like i'll miss a shift or put it in the wrong gear b/c of the extra momentum

i have a nice ergo leather OEM knob and can't be happier

I put a Rob Knob "Magnum" in the e30, and personally I love it. Even if saying I love the "rob knob magnum" makes me feel really, really gay.

On an older getrag with balky syncros, you're not going to be doing much "finesse" shifting as is, so I like the ability to just sorta slam it.

yup, heavy knobs, feel different. After a while, a lighter knob feels different. I dont think there's really anything better, just what you prefer.

Too bad that ChrisD guy was a flake, because his CNC'd knobs were sweet, and inexpensive.

i think i tested their prototype for the magnum 18 some months ago. it was going in Arjun's (from UUC) ITS 325, but since RRT was still building it I gave it a test for a week. i did not like it. don't even think about grabbing it in the summer w/o gloves on. but you certainly could ram it into gear!

i got the chance to do some parking lot driving in arjun's car with UUC's short shift and that massive knob and it scared me. i think i would money shift it during the first lap! i prefer a lighter knob so i can feel the gears engage
